MyWorld Tuesday: Penguin Fountain

Photobucket

The Pinguinbrunnen (penguin fountain) in the Stadtpark, the biggest public park in Hamburg. I have no idea why penguins, but I like it :) It was build in 1925, the penguins were made in 1912 by the sculptor August Gaul, the German Wiki article has some more pictures of other sculptures he made, all animals. The penguins you can see now are replicas, though, because the originals were vandalized and some were stolen.

That's a beautiful fountain. That's too bad the originals were vandalized but good that it was restored.

it's a lovely fountain, although penguins do seem a curious choice. What a shame it was vandalized, but the restoration looks great.

A lovely restful place to sit quietly on a warm day, with the sound of water in the background.
Unusual for penguins to be a part of the design when they are native to such a far away land.

What a peaceful thing to look at. I really despise vandals, but goo to see they haven't won.

What an unusual place to display the penguins! Too bad the originals are gone.

Since the original penguins were stolen, I won't make jokes about want to carry the fountain off to my back yard. But I love anything with penguins, and all fountains, so this is a perfect combination.
