MyWorld Tuesday: Dove Elbe

Photobucket
This weekend, we went canoeing on the Dove Elbe, a side branch of the Elbe. I had never been canoeing before and I had a blast. Today, my arms ache, but it was worth it.

We saw a ton of wildlife, mainly birds. Geese (Grey and Canada Goose)

Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus)
Photobucket

a Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and an Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus), which I hadn't seen in the wild before
Photobucket

these are some kind of waders (shorebird)
Photobucket

They flew ahead of us, finally gathering on the shore to continue looking for prey.

Camera Critters: Harvestman and Crab

Photobucket

I found this yesterday: the Venus flytrap on my balcony has trapped a harvestman/daddy longlegs (an arachnid, but not a spider) that was probably trying to eat the fly leftovers that the trap caught before. I feel a bit sorry for him, especially since he was still waving his legs when I found him.

On a happier note, I have seven more land hermit crabs who needed a new home after their previous owner decided to give up crabbing.

here they are exploring the kritter keeper I put them in after I brought them home

and here's one of them in the crabitat

It's a girl!

Photobucket
Peekaboo! The newest member of Hagenbeck's elephant herd, a little girl born last Friday, as yet unnamed.

Photobucket
She was four days old when the photos were taken.

Photobucket
I think that she's already very adept at using her trunk.

MyWorld Tuesday: Bus and Ships

Photobucket

Where did that come from? I don't know if someone actually shipped an US schoolbus to Germany, but it did look very much like the real thing and not like a remodelled bus made to look like one.

Photobucket
See that guy standing on the platform? I don't know what he was thinking, the Elbe is dangerous to swim in!
I'm just pulling your leg of course, it's a statue. There are more of him to be found in other parts of the port and one is riding a giraffe (statue) in front of the zoo.

The photos were taken in Oevelgoenne, a part of Hamburg were many captains used to live and spend their retirement, and there are a few museum ships, for example a fire ship and an icebreaker. The ship in the photo is an Ewer, the name comes from the Dutch envarer, which would translate to German Einfahrer = one driver. Originally, Ewer only had one crewmember. The big wooden paddles, daggerboards, are typical for Ewer and are used to stabilize the ship in the water to avoid drifting and spinning in the water.
